C-IDEA seminar 2025
Post Date : 2025-03-01
A luminary in art and design, Dr. Li Xu—renowned as the visionary founder of the Beijing Opera Art International Poster Biennale—has invited me to present at the C-IDEA (International Design Educator Association) 2025 seminar. On February 14, 2025, at Purdue University, I shared my insights on Teaching Beyond Borders, together with five incredible speakers in a hybrid format--Dr. Petronio Bendito (Purdue), presented in person at the Rueff conference room, while Keith Kitz (Suffolk University), Wesam Mazhar Haddad (New Jersey City University & Founder of Poster Stellars), and Felicia Barrett (Purdue) joined us via Zoom. We missed Professor Scott Laserow of the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Author of Making Posters: From Concept to Design, who was unable to attend due to illness.
It was over two hours of engaging discussions that left us deeply inspired! The diverse perspectives and methodologies sparked meaningful conversations about the many ways to approach design. The passion and dedication everyone brought to this seminar—on Valentine’s Day, no less!—was truly heartwarming.

Workshop at IIT Bombay, India
Post Date : 2025-02-09
I am honored to have been invited by the IDC School of Design to lead a workshop at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Bombay on January 10, 2025. This opportunity to collaborate with esteemed faculty and engage with talented students at such a distinguished institution is truly a privilege. Established in 1969, the IDC School of Design is renowned for its comprehensive industrial design, communication design, animation, and mobility and vehicle design programs.
At the end of the workshop, one participant noted, “We learned a new way of working, how to function as a team, and understand diverse perspectives.” The workshop demonstrated the relevance of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War to modern design, as seen in participants’ responses and outcomes. Integrating principles like “knowing oneself and one’s enemy” enhanced self-awareness and strategic thinking. Participants reported confidence in applying visual hierarchy, minimalism, and contrast, with Likert scores averaging 3.7–4.6 (74%–91%). These results indicate the workshop’s success in improving self-awareness, strengthening strategic thinking, and highlighting the applicability of Sun Tzu’s principles to design.
Self-reflection and collaborative critique helped participants address design challenges, aligning with Sun Tzu’s emphasis on adaptability and understanding adversaries. High scores for audience understanding (4.6, 91%) and collaborative reflection (4.1, 81%) underscore the importance of strategic planning and teamwork. The positive reception of Sun Tzu’s principles (4.3, 86%) validates their potential to enrich design pedagogy by connecting ancient wisdom with contemporary practices.

EDDE 2021 Design Conference
Post Date : 2024-06-10
The EDDE Online Design Education in 2022 was the result of two years of planning and was held from September 1 - 3, 2021. The conference was organized in collaboration with Professor Mandar Rane and Dr. Purba Joshi from the Industrial Design Center (IDC) School of Design, IIT Bombay, and Adjunct Prof. Sheeraz Wania from George Brown College in Toronto, Canada. After the website launch in late September 2021, the call for abstracts was made in early October. The conference, which utilized the Zoom platform, was attended by around 100 participants who had an engaging session over three days.
One of the most significant benefits of the virtual format was that attendees appreciated the low resource, planning, and budgetary requirements compared to traditional in-person conferences, which may also necessitate international travel.
The conference videos are now available on the EDDE-Designeducationconfer1116 YouTube channel, where viewers are encouraged to subscribe and show support by liking the content. Click on the link below for our recorded videos from the event.
