Out of Sight Out of Mind

One in six Singaporeans suffers from some form of mental illness, according to pass national surveys on mental health. Believing that the right exposure promotes knowledge and understanding, students Lim Chin Ping and Adeline Ong embarked on a project to put a face to mental illnesses. They crossed paths with almost 400 people suffering from mental illness on their visits to Sunlove and Surya Homes.

Final year project

As a design adviser to Lim Chin Ping and Adeline Ong's photojournalism project in 2008, they were guided on how to layout a book printed under the title "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" where they documented the lives of patience suffering from mental illness in rehabilitation homes. Out of Sight Out of Mind is a photo documentary done over a five-month period on the lives of patients living in rehabilitation homes.

A Good Decision

Lim Cai Ling's final year project DE2: Design Decisions includes a workshop and a board game where designers reflect on design ethics and responsibilities. The objective of her workshop is to enable a systemic change in designer' perception of the profession and to emphasize the critical roles and responsibilities designers play in the society.

A final year student at the school of Art, Design and Media, Lim Cai Ling consulted with me as a co-advisor for her project while I am a faculty at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information (within the same university). Because games were reflections of reality with minimal risk involved but with a high level of engagement, it became a powerful educational tool. The objective of her workshop was to enable a systemic change in designers' perceptions of the profession and to emphasize the critical roles and responsibilities designers play in the society.

In August of 2008, she consulted with me as a co-advisor for her final year project. In return, she thanked me in her book and I thanked her for her thoughtfulness. Cai Ling's project is reachable at http://www.serenelim.per.sg/fyp.html

An egoistic encouragement

The first batch of Visual Communication students from the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University held their final year project on April 28, 2009. All the hardship I poured into building the program before moving to the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information within same university was all worth the while.

Erica Ho May Yue presented a project where she documented loved ones, acquaintances and herself for the past 23 years as an archive of her past and her present history into an interactive art book. She paralleled life stories and identities with it and created a book that is a visually pleasing art piece. It was a pleasant surprise to see my name in her work. When asked she said, "you're one of first my professors!" Erica was one of my 2D foundation and graphic design students while at ADM.

Her interactive book was quite amazing with precise cuts and professional-level craftsmanship. Time flies they say. Experience comes with time and I observe that most of my students have matured in their ideas while I find myself maturing in a different sort of way...
