  Kiddo
Post Date : 2017-08-31

Kiddo was created as a mascot for Computown's Home Computing sales department. The importance of a recognizable mascot was important as it could be used in advertising, and collateral related to the department as well as an attraction to kids that had become the department's main targeted audience.

Kiddo was featured in an academic textbook "Gateways to Art" by Thames and Hudson published in the autumn of 2011. Authored by Debra J. DeWitte, Ralph M. Larmann and M. Kathryn Shields, the intention of the textbook is to provide an introductory survey to the visual arts, covering fine art, architecture, design and the graphic arts. Kiddo appears on page 209 under the "Visual Communication Design" chapter.

Ivy Tech Juried Competition
Post Date : 2017-02-05

Each fall and spring semesters, the visual communication department invites professional creatives to critique student work where they would do so as though they would pitch to a real client or employer. I was invited, together with two other jurors by the Program Chair of Visual Communication of Ivy Tech Southern Indiana in Sellersburg, Indiana to critique student work. With over 50 students presenting anywhere from one to four pieces of photography, graphic design, digital imaging artworks, and photo books, it was a slow start at 9 AM when we averaged about 15 minutes per student. After our lunch break which was also a committee meeting, we picked up our pace and by 430 PM, we were done. Then came the time to pick honorable mentions, first and second awards for the multiple different categories. After the awards are announced we celebrated at a Thai restaurant in New Albany, Indiana called Tanthai on Charlestown Road. It was a rewarding experience to have students thanking and valuing us for our time and feedback.

Students must present their work as they would to a real world client or employer. In doing so, students not only gain the experience of presenting in front of a group (the judges as well as their peers), they gain the insight provided by those who are working every day in the field of design. At the end of the day, jurors are to select those pieces they feel demonstrate the best work and awards are announced.

This event starts at 9:00am and ends around 4:00pm on Dec 15, 2016. More at http://ivysofad.org/?p=2663

ICTD
Post Date : 2017-02-04

As the publicity chair for the International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD), scheduled from May 13 - 18, 2015 in Singapore where I advise matters pertaining to branding and promotions of the international conference, a logo which is part of a larger branding effort for the conference which examines the role of computers and communications in social, economic and political development was created in May of 2014. The logo features the famous Merlion (a mythical creature combining the mermaid and lion) which floats above undulating waves in the famous island state. The contour (outline) of the Merlion was purposefully left out to suggest a borderless community as previous conference had taken place in Berkeley, California, USA; Bangalore, India, Doha, Qatar; London, UK; and Atlanta, Georgia, USA and had attracted the likes of Bill Gates of Microsoft as keynote speakers.

2013 Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure
Post Date : 2014-04-24

I wouldn't have thought that my poster submitted over 2 years ago for a contest hasn't been forgotten as it will be used for the 2013 Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure, coming up on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Mr Vern Calhoun, Director of Communications, The Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been hanging onto my entry since late 2010 when I submitted it. In an email from him dated April 28, 2013, he stated he has been a "big admirer of the clean design" and have been advocating for it since my submission. Variations on my design theme will be used on posters, race applications, the organization's website, and in their electronic communications.

Back in 2011, the judges of Komen NYC Race for the Cure poster contest located at 470 Seventh Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018, USA culled through over 200 entries and narrowed it down to 50, then to 20, and further down to the final eight and my poster was one of them.

It was truly an honor to be invited to the prestigious Typography Day 2013 conference as a keynote speaker in 2013 at the Department of Design (DoD) at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati). The title of my topic was Universality - how display typography transcends boundaries to communicate visually without the hassle of understanding a specific language. With a theme of display typography, visuals of signage, police cars, advertisements, and theoretical groundings of experience design with the focus on meaning by Nathan Shedroff was shared. Such a generalization was meant to generalize with the objectives to expose the opportunities and ramifications of universality in display typography. The focus on aesthetical, demographical, geographical, as well as contextual and practical ramifications of expressive typography from different parts of the world was also presented. The Mythical Emblems of Gragodon Part 1
Post Date : 2013-04-10

The cover for "The Mythical Emblems of Gragodon" by Singaporean author Venkataraman Gopalakrishnan. My design was inspired by Hell's Half Acre in Wyoming where the movie Starship Troopers was filmed in 1997. The elements of design such as line, shape, color, texture and format as well as principles such as balance unity, visual hierarchy and figure/ground were considered and employed in the design. The inside back cover of the book revealed a fold out map which showed the 7 kingdoms of the new world. Together with the author, we revealed his book launch at the Singapore Writers' Festival 2011 located at Singapore Management University on October 24, 2011.

Connecting the Dots
Post Date : 2013-04-10

In September of 2010, my submission, "Connecting the Dots" was selected as one of the 30 chosen social communication posters in a 7-themed poster competition organized by Good50x70 (for a total of 210). Over the past years, they have involved around 10,000 creatives from 81 different countries and the non-profit organization recently won a Medal of Representation from the President of Italy for championing social communications. The posters are able to translate the struggle and the activities of the NGOs in support of human, social, civil and environmental rights. The seven themes are "Play for Africa", "Freedom to travel", "Action against Mafias", "Whale Shortage", "Uncertainty of Cure", "Poverty" and "The year of the Tiger." These posters will be used by respective sponsors (such as Green Peace, WWF, etc) to further promote their causes.

With the likes of Woody Pirtle, Massimo Vignelli, Jonathan Barnbook, just to name a few who were the final judges, the pre-selection committee comprised of 28 communication professionals and educators with different backgrounds and nationalities went through 2357 submissions received from 81 countries. The winning posters were displayed in October in the heart of Milan alongside workshops running in the city's leading designing schools. On December 27, I received the printed booklet of the winning posters via UPS and it was a great feeling to see my work published but more importantly, I have done a small part to impart the message of tiger extinction in the wild.

A chamelonic research: A government grant turned award turned conference proceeding!
Post Date : 2014-04-24

An academic Research Fund supported by the Ministry of Education, Singapore, I secured RG1 S$5,000 grant in 2008 to work on a research titled "Food defines us: A visual discovery of Singapore's gastronomical culture" which sought to document the relationships between culture and food in multi-racial Singapore through the lens of a digital camera. Together with then-student, Adeline Ong, my campaign won a 2nd prize from URECA (Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The presentation ceremony was held on August 14, 08 by guest of honor, Nanyang Technological University's Provost, Professor Bertil Andersson.

URECA is a university wide program to cultivate a research culture amongst the most abled undergraduates. It is a unique opportunity for NTU undergraduates to touch, feel and experience research at a level not available elsewhere. The opportunity to undertake URECA is strictly by invitation and only to the most academically able 2nd and 3rd year undergraduates.

The research was also being presented at Computer Graphics and Visualization and Image Processing 2009 Conference in Algarve, Portugal from June 20 -22, 2009 and was published in the IADIS International Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems proceedings edited by Yingcai Xiao, Tomaz Amon and Piet Kommers.
