Nicknamed "The Big Red," this 170 cm x 70 cm daybed/couch came about from a sketch I made for what I call "experience design" intended for a living room in Singapore. Meticulous planning in experience design can heighten one's sensory within a crafted environment as it is also being balanced with one's background, history, culture and needs. I was inspired by Chinese wood carvings that are usually very ornate. Borrowing elements from Chinese furniture which are usually big, intricately carved and painted with bright colors, the owner's name in simplified Chinese characters was made part of the design in a what seems to be an all over, frenzied geometrical arrangements. Specific instructions were given to the carpenter in Thailand to use recycled wood when the order was placed in December of 2007. Careful attention was paid to the back of the daybed as well. A red sofa was placed over the front seating area to complete the design. |
